why do people catfish as different ethnicities online??

i wanted to make a quick rank on this since i just saw someone pretending to be japanese while their profile is written with extremely formal language which is obviously google translated. mind you i have barely been studying jp lately and its still extremely easy to spot? in 2026 nonetheless -,- i dont understand what people get out of it considering how easy it is to spot the fact that theyre catfishing and lying for no absolute reason. do people just want to be different....? i really do not understand

mostly to fetishize. that's why the term otaku exists, same reason why people use random japanese characters and shit on their profile. it's just been aestheticized. also could be a neonazi dogwhistle of some sort, like using K-On! characters, having the number 88 on your profile, or saying you're one age, and having other numbers on your profile where you might typically put your age.

fetishisation and insecurity

if i had to guess its probably something to do with wanting to be a specific ethnicity, so they end up cosplaying as it to deceive other people into believing that they are that ethnicity to satisfy that desire somehow ? or something along the lines of that idk its so random

this is about an instance ive personally seen (though its extremely common....) but outside of that ive also seen a lot of people getting called out for pretending to be black, saying slurs and using AAVE while being white and like i said its really easy to get found out so i dont understand what they get out of it really
