Day 2: Selected Ambient Works 85–92 — Aphex Twin

(This is completely a personal opinion. I’m not a musician and I don’t have technical knowledge of music theory; I just genuinely love electronic music and wanted to share this journey.)

It’s day 2 of this 365-day journey through essential electronic music albums from different decades and different parts of the world. Today was a rainy day in my city, and my companion for the occasion was this album by the godfather of IDM himself, Richard D. James — better known to most people as Aphex Twin.

Getting into IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) feels like entering a mysterious and complex corner of electronic music. It’s difficult to immediately become familiar with the sound. If you come from more conventional electronic music — festival EDM, energetic drops, uplifting vocals, beach-day synth melodies — then this feels like walking into that strange little shop in the mall you never dared to enter until curiosity finally opens the door.

Because this is different.

There are no massive festival drops here. No explosive optimism. No easy melodies made for the mainstream. Instead, there are strange experiments, layers upon layers of sound, textures, hidden rhythms, and details that demand your full attention. This is music you sit down and truly listen to.

Listening to this album gives me the feeling of a future I was promised but never got to live in. Even the strange track names like “Xtal” or “Pulsewidth” feel futuristic, almost like fragments from a world that still hasn’t arrived yet.

And honestly, I hope it does someday.

The sound is solid, immersive, and incredibly atmospheric. Listening to it while watching the rain outside made it easy to let my imagination drift. Hearing something like this back in 1992 must have felt like opening a door into the future. The kind of album that made people think: “The year 2000 is going to be incredible.”

In a strange way, Aphex Twin almost predicted that clean, futuristic Frutiger Aero feeling years before it existed.

And the best part is that no track leaves you indifferent. Every song feels like a different flavor, a different texture, a different dream.

PERSONAL CONCLUSIONS

I was already somewhat familiar with Aphex Twin’s work before this (and it’s very possible this won’t be the last album by him I revisit during this challenge). Listening to it while it rained made the experience even better.

There’s something hypnotic about diving into all the patterns and details that only Richard D. James seems capable of creating. I think this album works perfectly as an introduction to both Ambient music and IDM for anyone curious about exploring the stranger and more introspective side of electronic music.
