Since today is the beggining of the FIFA World Cup, I thought it would be the perfect moment to talk about one of the most important electronic albums ever produced in Mexico. I would even argue that Música Moderna is not only one of the best Mexican electronic records of the last twenty-five years, but also a key piece for understanding a scene that rarely receives the recognition it deserves. Sussie 4, formed by Odín Parada and César Gudiño, emerged in Guadalajara during a particularly creative period for Mexican alternative music. 

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, a movement known as Acid Cabaret began to take shape. Often described as Nortec's younger sibling, Acid Cabaret fused House music with traditional Mexican genres such as mambo, cha-cha-chá, danzón, son and cumbia. Out of that movement came Nopal Beat, a collective that brought together some of the most important names in Mexican electronic music. 

Among them were Shock Bukara, Martin Parra, Galapago, Club Nova, Tovar and Fat Naked Lady. However, today we're focusing on Sussie 4's debut album. From the very beginning, it's clear that this record is something special. The album features outstanding vocal performances, especially from Denisse Guerrero of Belanova and Eli Guerra. 

Both members of the duo shine in their respective roles: César Gudiño crafting atmospheric synth arrangements while Odín Parada contributes percussion, samples and rhythms deeply rooted in Latin traditions. The album's title isn't accidental. Even more than twenty years later, it still sounds remarkably fresh. 

Tracks such as Conciencia Latina, Waiting For The Ride, Suite Tropical and Fly became defining songs of the Mexican House scene. Personally, I still believe Waiting For The Ride contains one of the best combinations of vocoder and bass ever produced in Latin American House music. Then there's El Rey Del Biutiful, a track that perfectly captures the elegant, playful and celebratory essence of Acid Cabaret. Listening to this album is understanding that Mexico developed its own electronic identity. It wasn't trying to imitate Chicago, Detroit or Paris. Instead, it took global influences and transformed them through a uniquely Mexican perspective.

Today, Sussie 4 no longer exists as the duo that created this album. The split between Odín Parada and César Gudiño left unresolved issues regarding the rights to the catalog, which is one of the reasons why Música Moderna remains unavailable on most streaming services. Meanwhile, Odín Parada continues to keep the Acid Cabaret spirit alive through projects such as El Gran Conjunto Cabaret, while César Gudiño has taken the Sussie 4 name in a more techno-oriented direction. Regardless of the controversy, the legacy of Música Moderna remains untouched.

 If you've ever wondered what Mexican electronic music sounded like in the early 2000s, this album is essential listening. A country with such a rich cultural identity deserved its own electronic sound. And it absolutely achieved that. Viva Mexico!
