See the thing is, back then when goth was a more recent and focal thing—it was not called goth.
Most calls called themselves things like Cureheads, or just straight up ‘punk’ because they were related.
‘Goth’ itself wasn’t a huge term back then, and it makes sense that when goth became a more popular term later one, most of the first bands didn’t relate to the term because it wasn’t what they were.
Hell, ‘goth’ was almost a slur/insult type deal back then. They didn’t like being called that.
Bands like The Cure, Siouxie and The Banshee’s, Sister’s of Mercy and more are goth staples, but back then they were not goth.
Now they’re considered goth because that is the new, overall, and encompassing term that has been agreed upon and taken into mainstream.
And I’m not here to hate on people for saying these jokes and shit.
I think it’s funny, and when you have certain people (cough.. cough… COUGH) who say shit like ‘goths look so silly and weird and it’s embarrassing’ when they looked like (COUGH) that back then; yeah.. it’s funny. It makes sense.
(Insane fucking take from PETE BURNS OF ALL PEOPLE.)
