A Series of Complaints. Volume 1. Part 1.

Complaint: an expression of dissatisfaction or annoyance. Complaining: expressing dissatisfaction or annoyance about something. Okay. That’s what I am doing. I’m not sure. I’ve hit some writer’s block, and the only thing I can think of is complaining. Maybe if I complain enough, I’ll get tired of it. I’ll read it back and go, “Oh man. Really?” So I’m going to start complaining like crazy. All right. Here we go.
Complaint number one. You’re being absolutely dazzled. Absolutely bamboozled. Twizzled. I don’t know. The old razzmatazz? Perhaps.
Facebook is built to keep your attention. It wants you to stay on the page. Keep looking. Keep scrolling. It's like the grandfather of the bad attention grab, but they all do it. Grabbing and keep your attention is why they only exist. But man, you have to take that into consideration. You feel like, “This is me. This is what I want to look at.” And sure, maybe it is. But the thing you’re looking at is also trying to keep you looking. You should probably consider that it’s getting you.
Complaint number two. Everyone knows this. So why even say it? Well, that’s the complaint. Everyone knows it, and everyone’s still looking at it. I’m still looking at it. Stop looking at it. There. Solved that one. Apparently not, though.
Complaint number three. What’s up with Instagram getting brighter on some posts and dimmer on others? I’m scrolling, and suddenly it’s bright, dim, bright. Bright, bright, dim. Dude. What’s going on?
It seems like to me on some posts it does this. Maybe they paid a little bit more. So if your brightness is down, then their ad will be full brightness. But at the same time, it's like, yeah, you can't look at bright stuff and then bright and then dim, dim, bright, bright, dim. That's doing something. I mean, it's your circadian rhythm, or isn't that when you, like, sun goes up and down? I mean, an hour one way or the other, like daylight savings time can mess people up. And now you're looking at, I mean, look how gentle that is, and now this thing's going bright, dim, bright, bright, dim, bright. I mean, maybe it's not intentional, maybe it is. Who knows what that's doing?
But browsing is doing something. You’re looking at things. Things are catching your attention. Your attention is going somewhere. Is that good or bad? I don’t know. I’m just saying it should probably be taken into consideration.
Complaint number four. I know this. Oh my gosh, I know this. I’ve heard it so many times, and apparently I don’t care. Whatever. Keep scrolling. Maybe the next thing will be interesting. It will be. It will be guaranteed, grabbing all of your attention, wholesale.
