every now and then i'll see something about people saying "message or add me" or something similar,but i can't message people that aren't friends,is it like that for everyone?is it an age thing? is it a setting? am i stupid and thats just how it is for everyone and the phrasing has confused me?because if it is that way why do people put it seperatley if you can't do them seperatley?

I don't think it's a configuration issue; when they say to "add" them, I believe they mean you should send a friend request so you can message them (to do this, click the "Add to friends" button on their profile, wait for them to accept, and then you can write to them).
i understood the add thing but sometimes they say message,which to me implied that you didn't have to friend them to do that,maybe thats just me tho.
