album review - igor

hi. this is an album review, basically a review of a music album i like. i did one of these on napo while i was there but never had time to make anymore. for my second album review, i wanted to choose another tyler album because his music is some of my favourite music of all time.

there will never be another album like igor. i have listened to so many albums in the last year but i can absolutely say for sure that none of them are as distinct, emotional and powerful as igor will ever be. it's kind of insane that tyler was able to make something that topped the charts like this, and only two years after flower boy as well, which was already amazing and some of his best work, but then he just proceeded to top that.

igor is the most story focused album tyler has made since the wolf trilogy. a story about his alter ego, igor, falling in love with a man and the love triangle that ensuesfrom it. this album explores igor's love for this man, his dedication, his fears and worries and how ultimately he feels about it ending in those last three tracks. it's very difficult to want to let go of something as sacred as a relationship with somebody else, but ultimately sometimes it just can't work out. you have to accept that you need to move on and maybe you'll find someone else in the future. i have had many relationships and friendships i've not wanted to end just due to how much fun i had hanging out with that person, but i've had to accept over the years that it's best to let things go. it's why igor asks the man if they can still be friends at the end of it all, because it's just so hard to want to let go of the time you spent.

even outside of its spectacular story and emotional core, igor is one of the best produced albums tyler has ever made. the sound of igor is so distinct and unique in a way that i do not think could ever be replicated. the raw, gentle and atmospheric sounds of the instrumental clash well with tyler's pitched up vocals, blending chaos and beauty into one of the most memorable sounds for an album in recent memory. every single track is excellent, even what's good, and not a single one feels like a waste.

i originally didn't vibe with igor at first, as i found the style difficult to properly grasp and adjust to, but i can confidently say it is tyler's magnum opus and one of the best albums of the 2010s. it isn't my favourite of his, i have two other albums of his i think are more my style, but igor is his most important. igor is the album that really made people realise that tyler was something special.

there will never be another album like igor.

10/10
