listening to: culture club - time (clock of the heart)
gooooddd evening everyone ^_^!!! it is 9pm, i'm hyped up on sugar, and i am very excited because:
i'm going out on the town tomorrow! not with friends unfortunately, just with my brothers -.- but that's okay!! i love being in the city, it's so much more fun than being stuck at home all day with nothing to do... sigh. anyways i'm currently trying to plan my outfit; should i go casual, or do an 80s look? what do y'all think ?
aside from that, i'm sad to report that not a lot happened today, as it seems to be so often these days... i woke up really late unintentionally and so i only had about ~6 hours of day before dinner. ah well, what can ya do ? lolz
since i have a complete and verifiable lack of updates on my day, i'm gonna recount something that happened to me at the end of last year instead, which will hopefully explain my recent posting about the blitz club and such:
so, picture this. it's the beginning of december. you're sitting in your room with your brothers, watching a compilation of christmas-themed tiktoks on your tv. one tiktok plays, and the audio in it is a song you've always heard around the holidays, but you never really knew the backstory, so you say "hm, i wonder what this song is about ?" and then go look it up on wikipedia.
as you're reading the article, you learn why the song was made. it was created to raise funds for starving children in ethiopia. you say "oh wow, i never knew that, that's interesting" and then go on with your day.
fast forward to a couple days later. you're chilling and doing whatever, and suddenly that song comes into your head again. you say to yourself "hmm, well i'll go play it so it'll be out of my head. why not put on the music video too just to see the faces behind each voice ?" so you play the music video.
when it starts, you realize you don't recognize a single person in it. not one. so you're like "wow okay that's interesting. i figured i'd know at least one of them" and then you see one person in particular who has the most interesting look of any 80s celeb you've ever seen. you think "oh my god, who is that ? i need to know this person's name" and then once you do some research, you determine that it was boy george, from the band culture club.
you already know karma chameleon because your local radio station plays it all the time, so once you find out a little bit about the band behind it, you become obsessed with that song. you listen to it on loop for like 3 days, before you get bored and start thinking:
"maybe i should check out some of their other stuff too."
and that's where it starts. you devour three of their albums within the week, and you become totally obsessed with the band. you're looking at photos of them online, you're posting about them on tumblr, and you're constantly trying to find more fans because you don't know anyone who listens to this sort of music and you want friends.
then after that, you're already gone. you start checking out similar artists, like david bowie, visage, and adam ant. then you branch out even further, listening to artists like bow wow wow, spandau ballet, and others you can't even think of because there are so many.
and then you watch live aid. and that's where the 80s obsession REALLY takes off. now you have over 75 new artists to look into, and you've already been introduced to their music so it's not as intimidating as going in blind.
you. go. CRAZY. you make an 80s mix playlist that ends up being over 8 hours long, and it is ALL you listen to for the next ~5 months. after that, you start checking out 70s artists, and then 60s artists, and before you know it, your literal entire music taste is populated by musicians whose primary fanbase is middle-aged white fathers.
this story, my friends, is how i became the person i am today. and it's all thanks to a tiktok compilation.
(note: part of the reason behind my utter obsession with culture club was because beforehand, i didn't know that a man could look and sound like that and still be a well-respected musician. i was so completely fascinated by boy george because i was kind of in the middle of a gender crisis at the time, and the concept of a cisgender man being able to look so feminine and not just have that kind of confidence but also still be seen as a man was incredible to me. it did ultimately lead to me realizing i'm transmasc though, so. shoutout to boy george i guess LOL)
(another note: thanks to this whole thing, i now associate the culture club song 'time (clock of the heart)' with christmas. so i guess it's a christmas song in my brain now...?)
