I remembered another pet peeve i have with this process. I guess this rant extends to any organization that gives literally any kind of service to queer people through grants or subventions.
So, they ask for money. They get the grant/subvention. Cool! They can now offer services like free legal aid for the trans client, free stamps for the documents, etc. Consequently, they're expected to report how they used the money and to prove it actually went to aiding trans people in their legal name changes. The org sends the evidence over and everything's good... but not for long.
Due to fascism taking over even more, less grants & subventions are being given out to orgs who offer services to the LGBTQIA+ community. Any grant request mentioning the community has a high risk of being denied. And yet, the evidence of proper use needs to be clear. This is one of the many flaws of NGOs that mess me up. These orgs only exist because the systems we exist in oppress us so badly. These orgs need that inequality to exist! But what happens when they're forced to adjust their language to include only the socially acceptable populations in their interventions? What happens when they still want to aid trans people, yet lack the funds to do so?
One concerning matter is our privacy. For them to aid us, we are required to mention in our documents that we are changing our names because we are trans. Our individual safety in the long run is tossed out so these orgs can easily verify how their money was spent. I talked to one in particular and they believed it was fine because it wasn't a problem in the moment...
Who knows when our governments will find out about CTRL + F in order to find us all and fuck us over? Even the very people who want to defend our rights can be short-sighted. So, if any of you wants to change your name, try using reasons like "this is the name my family, friends, neighbors and coworkers refer to me by, I feel the best using it and that's why I'd like to change it" instead of mentioning you are trans. Ofc this changes for those looking to change their gender markers too... its a complex issue. :s
