Backrooms (2026)

Conversations regarding this film seem to be pretty divisive. Everyone that I've discussed it with either love it or hate it. I personally thought the film was amazing. One of the most alluring aspects of the Backrooms as a concept is the existential dread that resonates like a 60hz fluorescent hum in your chest - and this film nailed it. I was uncomfortable the entire time; from the misremembered "Still Life's" haunting the poorly lit department store copy, to empathizing with Clark's emotional breakdown, to the grotesque manifestation of Clark's violence and rage...it's perfect. My only qualm is how Async was introduced. I think that it would have been more terrifying to leave their presence ambiguous; perhaps the audience could've pieced together who they were throughout the film without it being explicitly explained. An ominous "company" simultaneously exploring the Backrooms adds just enough mystery and suspense to keep the horror running.
