Hii, how are you guys!
(I recommend listening to Ganguro Parapara, or any eurobeat/techno-beat/parapara song to enter in the mood!)
This is my firts blog in english, I was in the mood to do it. Maybe in the future i will make more of this... we'll see,.. it kinda depends of my humor. So, let's bring the context! (english isn't my first languaje, please don't kill me ≡(▔﹏▔)≡ ).
It goes without saying that this blog isn’t 100% comprehensive when it comes to the different sub-genres that make up the gyaru scene. I’d encourage you to look into magazines and blogs by experienced gyarus, which you can also find on Spacehey,.... At the end of this blog post, I’ll list a few gyaru blogs to encourage you to find out more about this subculture.
For resume, gyaru it´s a subculture that borns between the 80's and 90's in Japan. Maybe you have heard about how "gyaru break standars..." It's not exactly that. Japanese girls ans mostly woman how started it was because they liked "trends" from foreigners, what causally breaked the tradicional idea of a japanese woman in that time: calm, piel blanca, pulcra...
Gyaru are known most for her tan skin, llamative makeup and hair. There aren't estrictas rules for the clothes, they complementan the look. Ganguro or old school gyaru was one of the firts and one most knows. The Mamba and Yamanba styles are derived from this sub-style and are characterised by more extreme make-up and tanning.
However, and finally we reach the point of the blog, there are a lot of ways of being gyaru. Being loyal to an only substyle isn't common this days, and that's okay! You don't need follow one of them, buying a lot of clothes,... You still can be gyaru if you got the makeup, hair and actitude!
For example, we got "kawaii" ones, like hime gyaru, who is kinda inspired by lolita fashion, or himekaji gyaru, a causal version of this substyle.
Well... maybe you rather a style similar to rock clothes, or goth? You definitily love rokku-gyaru and goshikku!
There's also a subvategory called amekaji, more colorful and how the name sounds, inspired by american clothes like university collegs chaquets!
The boys aren't left out of this subculture! They are called 'gyaruos', they use to wear rokku, amekaji,... And if I'm not mistaken, the gyaruos who go for the ganguro look are known as senta guys
Not exactly a substyle, more a category, we got kogal: gyarus that are students and adapts their uniform to still being gyaru without breaking a lot of rules.
Unlike other subcultures, gyaru have no issue with consumerism; on the contrary, it was one of their cornerstones. However, you don’t need to buy loads of clothes to be a gyaru, and it’s certainly not a requirement!
The most important thing is to wear make-up, style your hair, and have the right attitude. That, combined with the wide variety of sub-styles that can be adapted to suit everyone’s taste, is what makes gyaru so versatile for everyone.
Essentially, being a gyaru isn’t about choosing a sub-style and sticking to it, but about expressing yourself and being true to yourself, no matter what others say. Although it can be tricky, I still find it hard to get over my shyness <(_ _)>
Of course, there are certain rules that must be followed in the gyaru subculture; otherwise, it wouldn’t be a subculture, and anything that makes people uncomfortable could be called gyaru.
I’ll be writing a follow-up to this blog post, in which I’ll explain why this subculture has been gaining more visibility recently.
And as promised, here are some users who chat and are part of the gyaru community!! (in spacehey, for nor)
- あんたま ☆ ¡¡El besador de spock número 1!!
- Sunny
- ⋆.sn00kiec00kie𖤓: In one of his/her/their blog has a google doc with a lot of useful gyaru resources !!
When you search gyaru at blogs, one of the first one is from !Sp00keyFruit!. I wouldn't recommend it because it contains advice that isn't true and misinformation (several people in the comments have pointed this out).
That's all for now. Have a good day/afternoon/evening (✿◡‿◡) !!
