"Im not supposed to like you."
"But?"
"I want to do that again."
Funny, sweet, thought-provoking at the same time. A bold innovation that serves as another breakthrough for the LGBTQ community, considering the time when this film was being released. Im finally giving this film the appropriate rating, a five star encounter, no less. Romance peaked when Clea Duvall and Natasha Lyonne went to the backdoors of that gay night club. Lets talk about this film, the things that i absolutely adore, and celebrating the act of love in the most festivities month.
I have something to talk about first, before i forgot about it. This film, has such a surreal, dream-like visual that i found beautiful. Ive only just noticed this through my first rewatch, and because i cant really explain it im just going to mention some other works that have the same kind of vibes. Perhaps, Rushmore by Wes Anderson, and Napoleon Dynamite by Jared Hess describes the visual of this film at best.
Another thing that i want to talk about, is that this film IS that funny. I mean, i could see that the humor might not be for everyone but i just love it so much. Especially that boys training scene with RuPaul, i shouldnt have laughed as loud as i did, especially in the middle of the night. But what made the comedy in this film brilliant is the fact that they manage to balance it out with powerful emotional scene.
While tackling the topic of LGBTQ, this film manage to make a comedy out of it by of course showing how far society would go to ridicule those who are part of the community. Yet, they still deliver the struggle in being part of the community, because it very much still a problem that worth to talk about. The rejection is one of the many problems that people in the community would face, and the length of those rejection vary from hate speech to full on prosecution.
To talk about this film is to talk about love. While i acknowledge the many reason for one to show hate for this community, i still stand by my opinion that no act of love should be categorized as forbidden, unless its on the subject that actually involves mental condition. The sad part about this film, is probably the fact that the condition hasnt changed much for the community.
They still very much battle the rejection that came from society, maybe you could argue that in the state the condition is much better. But you couldnt say the same thing to the rest of the world. Which is why this film is thought-provoking, because while on the ground it's a romcom that may only appetize those who are part of the community, it very much a film for everyone.

What you should really take from this film, is the freedom that came from showing love. Love is the core of all emotion, it is the very thing that drives all human, in my opinion. To love, is to be free. To be free to feel things, to be free to show emotions. The act of forbidding LGBTQ people to love, i think is a problem that a lot of people deal with, even if they arent part of the community.
Which is why, in the most festivities month of the year, i want to celebrate it because it is my way of appriciating love. By acknowledging the struggle behind it, voicing my opinions regarding said topics, and most importantly by showing love to everyone. Literally, be kind is easier than to hate.
Trying out a new template layout, kind of suits the film! This review is also available on my letterboxd!
