Chainsaw Man Rewatch Analysis: Episode Three

it's uh. its been a hot minute hasnt it... sorry for the delay, i got caught up with school, work, con, etc. anyways, lets review!!

i could have gone off of Powers introduction in episode two, but her dynamic with Denji is much more solidified within episode three, so i decided to start there. one of the most notable aspects within thier dynamic is that while Denji is often compared to a dog, Power is compared to a cat. Denji is tied heavily to dogs due to being repeatedly compared to one in the first and second episodes, as well as his bond with Pochita, and Power's reason for being much more well-adjusted than the average fiend is due to her connection with Meowy. coincidentally, both have a dislike to the other repsective animal, and both were found by Makima sometime after the loss of their animal companions. 

while it obviously isnt the first instance in which it pops up, this episode touches on Denji's struggle with understanding intimacy, sexuality, and his own desires. while he doesnt really care about Meowy's wellbeing, he changes his mind when Power offers to fulfill his desire of touching someones breasts.  im going through this episode chronologically (like the others) so please put a pin in this for now.

this episode also sets up the trio of Denji, Aki, and Power, all three of which having their own respective gripes with either devils or humans, or both. Aki has a hatred for devils, while Denji harbors a hatred for the human people who would abuse and exploit him. Power, however, hates both.

another note about Power is her tendency to lie— while it's later revealed to be a coping mechanism of hers in the manga, she does so here in an effort to get Meowy back. when she's betrayed by the Bat devil regardless, she then expresses empathy towards Denji for not being able to pet Pochita anymore, which Denji returns after chasing down the Bat Devil.
