OK first off please don't pierce yourself, or have your friend do it. Just get fake piercings and wear those. Infections are no joke, and if something goes wrong, you will be stuck with that scar for life. If you do end up doing so, definitely don't use a piercing gun. They don't really heal well and increase the risk of infections, piercing bumps, and scarring by a ton. Oh, and you can shatter your cartilage that way. Shattered cartilage doesn't heal, and can cause a host of other problems.

Answering the hypothetical, piercing yourself is pretty tricky. You're only getting one angle and it's mirrored. Shaking can result in the needle going in the wrong spot or missing outright. It's typically easier to have someone else do it, as they can get multiple views and have steadier hands. As for the pain, I had mine professionally done, and it hurts. It's a sharp pain, about an 7-8/10, but only for a second. It's gonna ache for a few weeks, and can take upwards of a year to heal.  They're also super fickle when it comes to healing. If it gets too irritated, then it's a lost cause.  I had mine for about 5 months before it swelled up so bad that it almost "ate" the earring, and was just not gonna heal. That was nearly 5 years ago, and I have a permanent scar on my right ear. Granted everyone's experience is going to be different.

You can't sleep on it, so you'd need a travel or donut pillow to sleep with, assuming you pierce the side you sleep on. You have to be careful with hair products if you use any. Hair can get tangled in it, increasing irritation. If you wear headphones you can't use over ears or buds with hooks. 

In essence, I'd say just get fake rings for now, and wait until you are mentally ready to take on the care, risks of losing the piercing/infection/irritation, and the insanely long healing process before getting it done.

i peirced my septum in school, not even in the bathroom SOME HALL WITH CHAIRS AND MY FRENS WERE SITTING AROUND ME. Just know anatomy b4 piercing and make sure the needle goes in the right angle ALSO DONT USE A PIERCING GUN YOU WILL BE PRONE TO INFECTIONS IF YOUR BODY CANT HEAL EASILY
