I think the biggest reason why your friend bought a Nintendo DS instead of a Nintendo 3DS was actually the Nostalgia aside it being cheaper.

But then you could actually play a lot of games on Nintendo DS actually like you can play Nintendo GameBoy Advance Games on it.

that makes a lot of sense too, i forgot about the gameboy advance thing

I do remember the Mini Retro Video Game Consoles Trend that Nintendo had started then followed by Sega then Sony. (which Sony kinda Fumbled.)
