I'm sorry if I won't be too useful as I never experienced this, but maybe you can start small talks about It, saying it would be nice, that it won't change you as a good person. You should do what makes you feel comfortable and it would be right even to just take it off, you don't owe anyone na explanation since it's your choice, but yeah if you don't feel ready you can try slowly talking him into It.
