it's funny, a lot of times these people will even acknowledge the fact that they are untruthful but justify it with something like "even if they/I don't have [whatever disorder], they still have something else (a mental disorder/health problem) that causes them to seek "solace" in pretending to be something they are not... sometimes the truth is that just because someone seeks attention, it doesn't mean they are depressed or isolated or xyz... sometimes it is simply the action of someone who is self-absorbed, an a. hole, or... an attention seeker. bad or selfish decisions are not always caused by some deep trauma or mental issue. people can just be shitty, or immature. instead of giving them what they want, such as the attention that comes with labels, they probably need a taste of reality or just to be ignored. there are plenty of people who have rightly annnd wrongly been diagnosed whatever, and most of those people do not see it as a hot topic or even would consider letting it be the first thing people know about them. these choices (claiming to have...) are especially insensitive knowing it only makes things harder for the ones truly experiencing said thing. i don't think it would be absurd to say the reactions of others when learning of a person's disorder(s) have been increasingly negative because of these people who create misinformation by diagnosing themselves without a professional/educated opinion. so, without a doubt, this is a real issue. it proves how problematic it can be to promote "education on these topics" or "acceptance of those who struggle with them" in modern social media. a lot of the "teachers" and "activists" seen online are not qualified to share opinions on mental health & disorders. as for the "educating on xyz", it's rarely done in a way that helps break stigma or helps individuals with these disorders/illnesses that adversely affect their lives, but instead in a way that makes them alluring -mainly for the attention they bring to a person. |
