I've been to psych wards multiple times over the years. One of the first things they do is take your phone - they took mine last time I had been admitted. For some reason, phones are a big no-no in acute psych wards (but its different in every facility so idk for sure if this rule holds for all places). They also do take your belongings for your safety but you will be able to get them back at some point once they determine you're not a risk to yourself or others. I'm sorry you had to experience that - it sucks big time.
