I'm not entirely sure about 3G but 2G is a security nightmare. A pretty sizable amount of scam texts over SMS are legitimate numbers unintentionally connected to mimicked 2G towers ("SMS blasters") which send texts out using the aforementioned legit numbers, since 2G connections are barely authenticated. It also isn't that hard to intercept call and text in roughly the same way for the same reason. This is why a lot of Android ROMs now disable it at an OS level by default too, especially in the last couple of years.

AFAIK, 3G is mostly getting phased out to open up space on the spectrum for other things, since it's taking up a lot of it for a relatively low number of customers.

Yeah, I came across that in my findings as well. I think it sucks that it renders so many devices useless when connecting to more modern networks, but I get that technology has to evolve.
