such are called digital audio workstation(or just daw), usually when choosing a one it's less about "what is the best" and more about "what suits me"

if you are looking to record something with microphone(e.g. a band, vocals) then the cheapest working option is audacity, it can record from almost anything and get the job done well, even tho it's more of a general audio recording app than a daw

i would recommend going for an older version cuz newer are hot ass, i have 3.7.7 installed and i will die on this hill before i install whatever dogshit they call audacity nowadays

the only downside is that audacity works really bad with vst's so no guitar amp emulators or anything

midi is also out of the question, it's absolutely terrible there

if you want a proper vst support then you can try reaper

it IS a paid daw HOWEVER, the free trial is pretty much infinite and is enough for most people who record at home

unlike audacity, reaper has a proper vst support which allows you to use amp sims and other stuff

reaper wasn't really designed for midi however i heard you could make it run them...

but don't take my word for it since i haven't tried that

starting from here it is for the better to have an asio audio interface, since some of the following daw either work better with them or just straight up work ONLY with asio devices

avoid behringer, they are e-waste

the cheapest option i know of is m-audio m-track duo for ~50 us dollars, it's pretty noisy however it has it's own driver and works well enough

next is fruty loops studio(aka fl studio), probably the most popular daw out there

best piano roll out there, full support for midi and vst's, if you write rap beats or electronic music then this is might be it

this one still works with regular audio devices (and i think most people use it like that) however if you wanna record withit (which you can) then i think an asio device is a must

fl can do a lot, but the automatization is very hard and chopping samples is a pain in the ass especially without 3rd party plugins

if you need that then...

ableton, unlike fl which has a shit ton of eye candy, this one looks like it's from the 90's(which it is)

you also have to somewhat learn it

very good at making all sorts of electronic music or if you wanna chop some samples

automatization is one of the strong sides of ableton, once you learn it, you can do some crazyyyy stuff with it

this is one of the daws that works only with asio devices so if you gonna use this be aware that you need one to use it

you can record with ableton however if you only record this might not be the best choice

it takes time to learn but it might be very worth it

and lastly...

logic pro

this one is only for mac users

industry standard, can do well both recording AND midi

the downside that it's clunky af and has a pretty steep learning curve

worst piano roll oat, i still have no clue how it works

the mixer is really good tho, looks nice and works so

you can do almost anything in it and mix recording and midi sequencing well if you really need that

however i will say you could use midi in one, record in other, and put it together in a third one

the best out of all is the one that works for YOU

if you are trying to imitate some artist, do some research and find out what they used to make their music

well... if you haven't checked already but the last 3 are paid and have very limited free trial where you usually can't even save the project you worked on

you can dm me and i will "help you out" in regard of acquiring them

If you’re not looking for something highly professional or packed with a huge number of features, I’d recommend BandLab; it has the essentials, it’s free, and it’s web-based—though it’s definitely not professional-grade.

yess, thank you so much! yeah, we wanna start with something easy at first and then maybe switch to something more professional :)

open source stuff i used to dabble with:

- lmms (cross platform daw)
- ardour (same tbh)
- audacity (for detailed editing of audio files)
- mixx (virtual dj console thingy)

i liked all of those cause they worked and were free :hearts:

note that these are for desktop ofc

idk bout mobile apps :o
