Pickle is it's own thing. A pickle can be anything, you can pickle fruits and vegetables, pickle is a process, not a food. Pickled cucumbers (gherkins/cornichons usually) are most common, so they are referred to as pickles, in the same way Vaseline is petroleum jelly. People usually say vaseline because it is shorter but it not the product itself, it is the brand. Hope that makes sense. -A pickle enthusiast.
