I've noticed that lot of those abusive 'romance' books I see in stores are debut stories written by teenagers, at least on the Polish market. In last three years they've being pumped out without any quality control, not only regarding the plot line, but also basic grammar and spelling. Publishing has developed shein for literature.ย

This might be me being a paranoid killjoy, but I'm a little worried that this is how teenagers perceive romance? As being abused, especially sexually, with it being present in almost every book of this kind? These books contain actual rape scenes and I'm appalled by the fact that someone agreed to print this considering how awfully the topic is mishandled.

I think it's a bit different in the U.S., I'm mostly seeing 20-30yos publish dark romance, but I think that could be because the publishing world is different here. The phenomenon of young people writing about taboo topics this way still exists here though, primarily in the online fanfic world, with so many teenagers releasing darkfics and dead dove without understanding the gravity of what they're writing about in the slightest.

I believe that our society has recently taken a shift into glorifying lust over love, and normalizing violent pornography. I think this has greatly effected the way young people see romance, and for a romance to feel "real" to them, they feel as if it has to be violent and dehumanizing. This view of romance is very common in victims of sexual assault, but disturbingly, seems to be becoming more mainstream.
