Great questions. I could write an essay in response to this.. lol I was raised by these kind of people. It's tradition but it's also easier - socially and cognitively for them to perpetuate this shit. It's a ready-made identity that they don't have to construct from scratch. They are the best people in the world to their in-group, but very cruel to anyone they percieve to be the out-group. Yankees being one. They'd never say it to your face, but you'll never be one of them. You'll always be suspect. It impacts everything for the rest of your life. Some of the shit that was spoonfed to me is awful. Especially myths about the civil war, don't get me started lol they can't see themselves as the bad guys even if they have some cognitive dissonance... it really does take lots of education (critical thinking) and life experience to overcome... anyways, thanks for sharing!! |
