i believe canada is taking this kind of thing in the right direction, but of course it's not perfect. you can look at the act here: https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/safe-social-media-act.html i think that it's better to regulate and police online platforms and enforce online safety, rather than outright banning social media as a whole and simply prohibiting children from using it. if you read the bill, you'll see it talks about having minimum age requirements for owning an account on social media services, intending the minimum to be 16 years of age, which seems bad, but under that line it talks about how if a platform has established and maintained significant safeguards for children, they may be exempt of the requirement. now obviously the ban isn't perfect, but i think it's a lot better than simply banning the internet as a whole. what are your thoughts? |

I am actually happy about the ban... I saw horrible things on internet as a child, so much gore, fetishes, p*rn.... it really ruined me and unsensitized me to literal gore.... Internet ruins mental health as well, no wonder so much young people suffer from so much mental illneses, myself included. Sadly this should have either came WHEN internet was starting to get more accesisable to people or protect kids better. Doing this now when entire generation grew up on internet (gen alpha) can make this ban worse for kids. On the topic of mental health I'd like to read more about it: recently I thought of reading Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism, I heard he discusses this topic in one way or another by Factory Reset 𝄞𝄢; ; Report |

i feel no one under the age of 4/5 should have access to an ipad or anything like that. ofcourse they should have acsess to tv shows like dora and bluey and stuff like that and the occasional mobile game if they can handle it but otherwise no one that young should. with the under 16 social media ban i believe thats one of the dumbest idea ive heard. speaking from experience i would not be in a good state if i was unable to access the internet. i believe no one under 16 should have unrestricted/unmonitered internet access but that doesnt mean they shouldnt have ANY internet access. 100%, internet saves lives in many occasions! by Factory Reset 𝄞𝄢; ; Report also banning in this exact moment will and I believe is causing more interest in participating in the internet as well, although I believe at some point all of this wouyld have been inevitable: as soon as people made the mistake of not properly helping us we were bound to having to do something this extreme, despite it being a bad idea :( this is what happens when you think with money and not with your brain sadly by Factory Reset 𝄞𝄢; ; Report |
Oh I completely agree, I'll read what you linked but it sounds way more human! On children having access to the internet though I don't really know what to think, I literally discovered internet existed when I was like 9/10 and even after that I didn't use it until I was 12/13, children having internet sounds kinda weird to me!
