This album is like a tragic play; shayfer uses upbeat pianos and organs to his a sinister theme beneath it. The songs really do feel like a musical at some points and it immerses you almost completely but right when you get into it takes you out by switching the vibe completely. This album got a 6.6 and for the full reason read it on my blog on friend rewind.
Weight of the world - song starts off strong with whimsical chords and it makes me think that this album is gonna be jolly. But then the lyrics start and it has a kind of glass half empty vibe to it. The repeating lyrics “that’s just the weight of the world we do what we must to stay alive the weak and wary will never survive” that is completely opposite vibe compared to the back track but overall the song has an almost theatrical vibe to it and it sounds really good so I rate it a 8/10!
For the departed -ok so this song makes me rethink the first song now I feel like rather then the singer saying the world is a hard and tuff place that has been weighing him down he’s using it as an excuse to do the things he does. But now it’s time for him to pay the price and whoever he fucked over wants him dead and he’s telling his lover that it’s over to run and forget him and he has to pay the reaper. Honestly the way this song flows and the backtrack with amazing vocals and the beautiful keyboard was honestly amazing so this is a 9/10
Where we belong - so this song follows the same theatrical approach the first two did. It has a strong piano and strong drum in the back track which makes it feel more upbeat butt the lyrics have a saddened tone to it. The way that the lyrics go it paint a picture of a ruined world and a place that got picked apart by people like himself. I believe it definitely uses the recurring theme that people use the state of the world as an excuse for there actions. But the overall song feels a lot more basic then the other two so 6/10
L.v.s (your lady waits) - This song switched the vibe completely. It’s slower melodic and focuses on a slow and steady piano rather than a strong and fast piano. This song really showcases the vocal talent of shayfer. The song seems to be talking about a lover or loved one who died and he’s saying that everything will be open and ready for his dearly departed it’s such a saddening and emotional song and I love the difference it brings to the album. 8/10
Villainous things - so basically our lead singer is definitely evil or “villainous” and he’s trying to convince his lover to be with him and relish in what she truly is. But also shayfer wants to be in control of her. Now the vibe of the song goes back to the “status quo” of the album which is the upbeat vibe with darker lyrics. which kinda makes me sad cause I was ready to here the slower quieter songs but I guess not. 6/10
Battle cry - at first I was thinking oh shayfer lost his lover to this guy who was better then him in some way and he wanted to fight for her back but then after looking through the lyrics you can’t lose a game of solitaire to someone. So I believe he is talking about how his mental problem have stopped him from getting the things he’s wanted. Even at the beginning he talks about how his friends were gone and his enemies got him when they left. So I’m thinking whenever he’s alone his mental problems tend to worsen and maybe a split personality or something is just trying to take him over and ruin everything. So this song is about him fighting his demons. But this song again has the same approach to the album and I don’t see it really being a pop out song in this album so 5/10 just cause it’s mediocre.
Peace - The opening to this song sounds so sinister. This literally sounds like the opening to a horror movie and with the added effects in the background makes it even more sinister. This adds to the overall vibe of this being like a lowk more sinister album then an upbeat vibe one. Again it slows down the album and I honestly love the sudden switch up giving us something different and I love it. But the lyrics are short and this plays like an interlude so I can’t give too much to it. 7/10
Diggin’ Up Hatchets - This song has such an amazing bridge like the slowdown and then slowly bringing back the original tempo slowly reminds me of the bridge in “come on Eileen” and it’s genuinely so amazing in my opinion. The song seems to be about how shayfer is surviving the evil acts happening in this world because he is lowk a lil insane but it’s ok we love the art we getting from it. But jokes aside this is def my favorite song but compared to some of the opening tracks it’s subpar so this is another 7/10
Under the Willow - This song has a slower vibe like lvs and I love it fr. I feel like he’s trying to say that while sitting and thinking about life something shook him to his core and he’s ready to change and he wants to redeem himself. It’s a complete 180 in my opinion to the rest of the album but I’ll give it an 6/10 because it doesn’t have a lot of substance but it’s produce well and sound alright it’s just nothing that pops out.
God speed - This song has a lot of tempo switches and it has a erratic pattern that works really well with a lot of moving elements and beautiful vocals around every corner. I think it’s about shayfer finally realizing how he’s no longer easy to fool. But the worst part is he has to get this realization from a friend who attempts to take advantage of him. Despite that he still wishes his friend luck on his journey and still views him as one. This song is amazing and produced so well this will definitely be a 9/10.
Have a seat misery - the song is like a minute but idk I like the spoken vocals and it has a vibe that it’s the end of a chapter you know like misery has finally come to him and it’s his time to go. He’s accepting the burden that is karma in my opinion. He sees misery as a great friend and it’s saddening cause the whole album has been a tragedy in my opinion. This song is a great ending to the album and in the context of this album a 10/10 I love this song for this album
