Crystal Lake: Thoughts regarding new Jason Voorhee's series

Hello, friends! I returned again to share my thoughts and experiences through a blog.

When I was younger (11 or 12) i used to be a bigggg Jason voorhee’s fan. I dressed up as him for Halloween, watched all the movies, and collected any merchandise involving Jason. So imagined my surprise to hear a new series was released about Jason (The last movie, Freddy vs Jason, was released in 2003).

I convinced my partner to watch it with me. This was his first exposure to Jason and the franchise in general.

(I wanna state, this is more a ramble than an organized blog.)

Starting off, I actually loved they kept some effects similar to the 80’s and 90’s. It brings back some nostalgia and keeps it close to the original. The only complaint was the zoom in on Pamela’s mouth. It looked goofy and took away the moment.

Speaking of Pamela / Pam, the actor did such a great job playing her. The expressions, deliverance of dialogue, and emotions were so raw and powerful.

Off topic, but Jason’s new child design is so adorable. In the old movies, you don’t get much on his character besides being bullied for his appearance.

I like that we were able to learn about Jason, how he was as a child, and his relationship with Pamela. He was a sweet boy that loved camping (not the bullying aspect, but seeing his excitement when camping equipment arrived).

What I didn’t expect to enjoy as much was the focus on Pamela. I enjoyed her as a character, her unpredictable mood swings, and seeing her drive more and more into madness. She had complexed layers. You sympathize with her and what she went through, but also her violence towards “innocence” people. Maybe some of them deserved a punch in the face, but not murder.

The introduction to new characters like Grace and Lee was really good. I know there was some complaints on some of these character (saying it slowed down the series), but I loved them. Grace was a reflection of children who lost their love ones at such a young age, as well as the desire to fit in.

NOW, I’ll talk about the new theory on Jason and how he is able to come back alive. I think the cockroach theory is really good and makes sense compared to the old magic theory. It gives lore on how he is never able to die.

Side note: i was wondering how Jason was able to grow up so fast. My boyfriend looked at the diagram presented and shared that because of trauma, he is able to grow into an adult man.

The one thing I really wonder about is why he is killing people. Was he following his mother? Is he angry at the world? Does the experiment cause a more animalistic reaction?

We can tell Jason is still a little boy mentally. I found his reaction to his father interesting.

Elliot’s character is so refreshing. He is a villain but showed genuine affection towards Pam and Jason. While his experiment on Jason is cruel, his first reaction to seeing Jason wasn’t how a scientist reacts. He showed genuine love and calling Jason beautiful.

Jason’s reaction when Elliot first reached out was hesitant, not a quick motion to kill. He let him take off his “mask” and touch him. I want to believe Jason had a moment during this and hearing the possibility of becoming a family. It was only broken by Pam and the mention of the experiment.

Elliot’s death is very gruesome. I wasn’t expecting it, maybe twisting his neck but not crushing his skull slowly.

My overall conclusion is that the series was really good and added needed explanation after years of theories. I am excited for season 2 and how it’ll play out. I really hope they stick with the movies (2 and 3).

Kudos: 4
