back in my childhood home sometime around 2007, my siblings and i religiously watched the barbie classics and my favorite at the time was island princess.
i begged my parents to buy the doll for me and i did eventually get it (successful toddler manipulation, ha!).
here's the thing, items that i prized or treasured very deeply i also took very good care of them.
this barbie doll i had, i took great care to keep her appearance as immaculate as possible: flawless golden hair, perfect tiara, absolutely no rips in her shimmering blue dress.
but then one day she vanished. poof, gone!
i did get a replacement doll, an exact copy, and i did my best to keep her good looks.
one day i set her down very carefully on the wooden playset table in the basement of the house and went to bed, placing her in a very specific and visible spot where i could easily notice if the doll had been moved overnight.
next morning? disappeared off the face of the earth.
i was inconsolable. my parents searched the entire household for the misplaced barbie and nada, zip! the whole place was practically turned upside down to find a singular child's toy. it was never found.
cue: another doll. idk why i got another doll. either i was spoiled or my parents were desperate to ease my incessant pestering and whining.
and guess what happened? yeah, that one ghosted me too.
now, every time the doll was misplaced, no one in the family managed to find it again. it never returned, never made any reappearance. all that remained was the doll's dress.
sounds like a crime scene, right? it definitely was a crime to 5-yr-old me!
years later, the mystery of those vanishing dolls was never solved. the mystery was simply left buried in the grounds of my childhood home, forever.
title card: 2010! i was eight, living in a different house.
this time i had the final copy of my island princess barbie doll. this replacement i guarded with fierce possessiveness, afraid it'd one day gain wings and fly off into the vacuum of space.
one thing i do remember is that doll's necklace acted as a button, which if pressed, could allow the doll to sing a song from the barbie movie itself.
well, i pressed that necklace button and the doll began to sing. i listened along, already memorized the tune from so many replays of the movie (unfortunately i do not remember the songs anymore).
midway through, the hidden microphone suddenly cut out and she began playing a completely different song that was most definitely not in the movie.
that's when i realized something in that moment: these series of dolls, the island princess barbie dolls that i've lost and replaced countless times for years, are cursed.
sixteen years later, i still firmly believe those dolls were cursed. just look at the evidence!

This reminded me of a mermaid barbie toy that I would chew on as a child.
