discovering new music during a summer job

i work at the local community center every summer and i always take these 3 weeks as an opportunity to find new favourite bands! i don't deal with my people much, so i can have music playing in my headphones all the time. obviously i don't do this when i work at events, only in the office.

i have three rules: 1. i can only listen to albums i don't have downloaded yet or haven't heard in full before. 2. i can't skip any songs. 3. i have to listen to the entire album, even if i don't like it that much.

adding notes in between so this isn't just a long list. enjoy watching me find a new obsession!

[week 1.]

MONDAY

• Sonata Arctica: Takatalvi
• Sonata Arctica: Ecliptica
• Korpiklaani: Karkelo
• Korpiklaani: Spirit of the Forest

i liked Sonata Arctica already but realised i haven't heard a full album from them before. YT music kept recommending Korpiklaani to me (specifically their song Vodka) and i finally checked them out- didn't regret it at all! 

TUESDAY

• Dynazty: The Dark Delight
• Dynazty: Renatus
• Avenged Sevenfold: STATICA

i looove Amaranthe and found Dynazty through them. same thing as Sonata Arctica: liked the band, never listened to a full album. i didn't have much to do after my lunch break so i didn't listen to much music. i watched South Park instead.

i didn't work on wednesday at all. went to the doctor in the morning and spent the entire afternoon cleaning my room since i got a new bed.

THURSDAY

didn't try anything new this day. pretty sure i have heard almost all of these albums in full before BUT i didn't have them downloaded so i didn't break any rules!

FRIDAY

this is when i found out there are two bands called Epica. i was tired and somehow didn't find it odd that a Dutch band made music in Italian. i liked Italian Epica too though! i knew Dutch Epica already since my dad played their music a lot when i was a kid.

Sonata Arctica is back today! apparently dad played Within Temptation too when i was a kid, i don't remember at all but i liked this album. and can you tell i REALLY liked Amon Amarth? they might be back later...

TUESDAY

wasn't in a good mood so i started the morning off with a pretty chill album. obviously Amon Amarth is back. i had to fix a bounce house and while sewing i had my headphones on my neck, just loud enough for me to hear the music. 

one of my younger brother's classmates also works here this month and she didn't have anything else to do so she hung out with me and said she wouldn't have expected me to like this kind of music.

i wasn't back after lunch, felt a little sick :(

WEDNESDAY

are we noticing a pattern here or is it just me? 

i like Cradle of Filth and thought Dimmu Borgir could be similar and i liked this album a lot!! however, as you might notice my newfound obsession with Amon Amarth was stronger. i ordered a shirt of them from vinted and considered pre-ordering their new album. i'll wait until i get paid for that.

i only got through half of this Helloween album, i underestimated how long it was when i turned it on during my last 40 minutes of work.

no Amon Amarth today, surprisingly! i finished listening to the Helloween album then since i wasn't working by myself today i turned on less "screamy" stuff. had my headphones on my neck all morning- i mean, i could've just not put it on at all but where's the fun in that?

i didn't confuse the two Epicas today. dad introduced me to them around the same time as Nightwish, not sure why that stuck with me so much more. i like Epica a lot now though!! i worked alone after lunch so i could fully blast them in my ears which was nice.

TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK!!!! not tomorrow, we have an event in the evening and i'm supposed to work 6 hours a day. i won't be in before the event because that would make atleast 12 hours of work. based on the amount of music listen to i think you can tell i usually work longer than 6 hours, which is why i can go home early on some days.
