I know, I know, I'm late 😓 I should've watched it as soon as it came out but I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT WAS OUT UNTIL A WEEK AGO!!! So I finally had the time to watch it today and I'll give my opinion on it! I must warn, I can't make a constructed criticism for shit and I'm even less organized in my thoughts #ADD
SPOILER ALERT, OF COURSE!!! I'll talk a lot in detail about shit that happens.
Okay, so, first of, during the first 30 minutes, I thought it was mid, mostly just cuz I'm extremely impatient and it was just the main character exploring around and not much happening. But then, the whole rest of the movie, IT'S JUST SIMON GETTING TRAUMA AFTER TRAUMA, he did NOT have a single break.
I literally cannot name a single happy moment in the movie. He was terrified, felt guilty, blamed for anything, traumatized, manipulated, drowned, lost a fucking arm, idk man it's kinda excessive :(
Everytime something new happened to him I checked the time left of the movie AND THERE WAS SO MUCH LEFT I was practically yelling for someone to get him out of here (,ŏ╭╮ŏ,)
I won't lie, I've been a little spoiled over TikTok, and I especially remember one guy saying that even if Simon survived at the end he would have to deal with acute radiation syndrome.... The whole movie this worried the shit out of me. I don't think the ship was protected AT ALL from the radiation of the camera, come on, let's be honest, they knew he'd mostly die down there.
I also think that Simon's past was perhaps a bit overlooked, we weren't given a lot of screentime about it and it was so muffled and hazy and confusing that I didn't really understand anything besides the station blew up and they blamed him. Why did it blew up? What exactly happened? Why was he the only one to get blamed? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED? Maybe I just missed something but I think that the flashbacks could've been longer and clearer. Yes, Simon was decaying due to the radiation, yes he was unwell and confused half of the time, but even so I think the moments where he passes out or zone out could also be moments where he suddenly gets his memory clean back temporarily just to torture him more, rather than only distorted memories.
On another note the movie was actually so good! The lightning was perfect, the sound designer certainly was awesome to make the viewers uneasy and Markiplier definitely played his role so well. I absolutely HAVE to compliment the makeup and costume for this movie that was probably one of my favorite part, as long as the whole decor! Idk if there any "behind the scenes" yet but I'll definitely wanna see the ship in more details and get to know how they made such fake blood quantity and especially how they made Simon lose his arm, I just want to learn all the details you know?
Also unrelated but I say big heart on Ava she's my goat. Makes me think of Stratt from Project Hail Mary, female leader that takes hard decision that the male protag take as betrayal for being sent to a certain death but in reality she didn't have a choice and it was for the best.
Same characters different fonts. Sort of. I'm still kinda mad at her but I know she did try her best as well. I wanted Simon to yell at her to help, get him out of there.
I think that's all I have to say, thanks for reading, if anyone did! If y'all have a similar movie to recommend me I wouldn't mind! Or any other kind of media, like either a game, book or something ^_^ Have a nice day!
