Gene Vincent?!?! Okay, that's a performer previously unknown to me. And for what it's worth, I thought Elvis was the first to sing that song. Comedian Steve Allen, a man who always had his finger on the pulse of youth culture 🙄, famously made fun of the song. Who knows? Perhaps roasting it on The Tonight Show (I believe) pushed awareness of it deeper into the American consciousness!
