Libraries are Underrated (not just saying this because I'm going to school to be a librarian)

More people should utilize their public library, not just for reading, but for community, education, and resources (whether that be financial, technical, or social help). I worry deeply about literacy and the effect of social media on younger people. Especially since the effects of it are only beginning to be understood. I had unrestricted access to the internet at a concerningly wrong age. The internet isn't entirely evil, I wouldn't be on it right now if it was. I think it is an amazing resource and improves communication immensely but I wish more people would turn to libraries as well. Obviously not every public library is perfect, I've lived in small towns..but if you are one of the lucky people with a good library, I'd suggest trying them out if you get the chance! 

Remember when game and DVD rental was a common thing? I love checking out games at my library before buying them. Even if you don't read, there is still something for you!

Public libraries would absolutely not be created today. Public libraries are entirely open to the public, funded by public sources, and do not charge any money for library cards. At my local library as a child, they would fine people if they kept material for an overdue period of time. I have noticed recently that many libraries (at least in my state) do not have any fees like this. This was shocking to me because it made me wonder if they were constantly replacing material. I asked one of the librarians about this and she told me that people steal certain types of books and they are used to (and sometimes prepared) to replace them. She mentioned teen pregnancy books being taken often, which broke my heart. They enforce their overdue policy by contacting the individual and/or putting a pause on their library card until the material is returned. People have stolen entire video game consoles this way before.

Anyways, It doesn't bother me if people say they don't go to their library or don't want to. I just wanted to express my appreciation and hopefully encourage someone to check out their local public library and possibly volunteer! (it is a lot of fun, I promise) :D
