The Cornfield Behind My Apartment

Okay, so I have to tell somebody about the weird shit that happened last night because I’ve been thinking about it all day and I’m still trying to convince myself it was just a deer or something lol.

For context, I live outside city limits in a really small apartment complex. There’s only 8 apartments total, 4 in each building, and we’re surrounded by cornfields.

I actually like living out here because it’s quiet, but once it gets dark it gets DARK dark. There’s only one light in the parking lot by the dumpster that looks like a streetlight, and it really doesn’t light up much besides that area.

So whenever I take my dog outside at night, I always bring a flashlight with me.

I also have to keep him on a leash outside. I use one of those retractable ones that goes out like 12 feet, which doesn’t sound like much, but my dog is tiny so trust me, 12 feet is plenty for his little ass 😂 He gets his freedom to sniff around and do whatever while I follow behind him.

Anyway, last night I took him outside before bed like I always do.

Nobody else was outside and it was super quiet.

He was doing his normal thing, sniffing around and taking forever to find the perfect spot to pee because apparently every blade of grass needs to be inspected first.

Then I heard something move in the corn.

Like a crunching/rustling sound.

I immediately pointed my flashlight over there but I couldn’t see anything.

And at first I really didn’t care.

We live around cornfields. There are deer and other animals out here all the time, so hearing something in the field isn’t exactly shocking.

I just assumed that’s what it was.

So we kept walking.

Then I heard it again.

I stopped and listened.

Nothing.

Started walking again and a few seconds later I heard it again.

Stopped.

Nothing.

And I swear I stood there like 🤨 because now I was actually paying attention.

So I started walking again on purpose.

I heard it.

Stopped.

It stopped.

I walked again.

It moved again.

Okay what the fuck lol.

At this point I’m shining my flashlight all over the corn trying to see something, and I couldn’t.

That was when my dog stopped too.

He was pretty far out on his leash and he just froze and stared toward the corn.

And THAT is when I started getting creeped out because he had been perfectly fine two seconds before.

I was like, “What do you see?

Obviously he didn’t fucking answer me 😂 but he just kept staring.

No barking.

No growling.

Nothing.

Then he turned around and came right back toward me like he was done being outside.

And I was like yep, same.

I don’t need to know that badly.

We went back inside and I locked the door.

Once I was inside for a while, I honestly started feeling kind of dumb about being scared.

It was probably a deer.

Like… girl, you live next to a cornfield. There are going to be animals in the corn. Calm down. 😂

So I pretty much forgot about it and started getting ready for bed.

Here’s where it got weird though.

My bedroom and kitchen windows are on the back of my apartment and they look directly out toward the cornfield. There’s some grass between the building and the field, but that’s basically it.

There’s no back door to my apartment. No sidewalk back there. No parking area. Nothing.

I was in my bedroom when I heard that same fucking sound again.

Right outside my window.

I just stood there for a second because I immediately recognized it.

Then I heard it again.

So of course my dumb ass turned my bedroom light off, grabbed my flashlight and went over to the window because apparently I needed to know. 😂

I shined the flashlight outside.

Nothing.

Moved it across the grass.

Nothing.

Moved it along the corn.

Nothing.

I’m standing there thinking okay, see? It’s a fucking deer. Go to bed.

Then some of the corn moved.

Just a few stalks.

I pointed the flashlight right at that spot and everything stopped.

I waited.

Nothing.

Then a different section moved.

Closer to my apartment.

I moved my flashlight over there.

Nothing.

I couldn’t see a person.

Couldn’t see an animal.

Couldn’t see eyes reflecting back at me.

Literally nothing.

Then I heard the crunch again.

And this time it sounded closer.

I’m not even gonna lie, I backed away from that window so fucking fast 😂

No thank you.

I closed everything up and eventually went to bed.

And yes, I know there’s probably a completely normal explanation.

It was probably a deer.

Maybe a raccoon.

Maybe whatever was in there just happened to be moving at the same time I was walking earlier and I made the connection because I was already creeped out.

But this is the part I keep thinking about.

When I was outside, I heard something moving through the corn while I was walking.

I went inside.

A while later, I heard that exact same sound again…

except now it was in the corn directly outside my bedroom window.

And there’s literally no reason for anybody to be back there.

So yeah.

Probably a deer.

I’m going with deer. 😂

But I have to take my dog back outside tonight either way, so I’m bringing my flashlight like always and I’m keeping my phone ready this time.

If I hear that shit again, I’m recording it.

Because I need to know if I’m actually hearing something…

or if living next to a cornfield is finally making me lose my damn mind. 🌽😂

i dont even live anywhere close to a cornfield but omg i have the need to shut all my windows tonight. Stuff like that always creeps me out a bit because its something so simple that wouldnt bother anyone during the day. Anyway im also actively believing it was a deer. hope you and your dog have a calm night tonight!!
