people are saying they're pirating music, which is interesting to me because i don't exactly know how that works.
from my experience knowing how people pirate movies, that's like...going somewhere that the movie is hosted externally from someone who recorded it, and watching it there, instead of paying the money for a streaming service or tickets to see a movie.
that feels more like pirating...because there's a risk. recording a whole ass movie--heck, even getting the file or leak or whatever, is a difficult and obviously hard thing to do, because it's illegal! because you have to pay every time you watch a movie, unless you buy a dvd or something.
but... i don't know of any music pirating websites, like they have for movies. the only way i know of downloading is the way you download stuff off of youtube.
& i feel like downloading off of youtube or something isn't pirating...is it? do people actually consider pirating music as searching it up on youtube, copying the link, and pasting it into, like...ytmp3?
please let me know because i would figure the process would be just as excruciating (in comparison to just getting a dvd and throwing it in the dvd player) as pirating a movie. but is it that simple for movies?
in that case i'd think pirating an absolutely disgusting artists' music wouldn't be that large of a sacrifice for whoever wanted to listen to them without directly supporting them.
if it's that easy--you just download it to listen to it offline--how is that any risk to you?
streaming services like spotify advertise you to pay for spotify premium in order to download songs. isn't giving an artist one hit on youtube so you can loop their song a bunch of times from your files the same thing? how is that in any way able to justify their actions or your continued enjoyment of their art, created by the kind of person who would do such disgusting things?
i'm not interested in having discourse about separating the art from the artist, so my apologies for going into that topic. my point here is, what actually is pirating in terms of music and how does it excuse the actions of the person you're pirating from, if they're a disgusting person?
(i only specifically mention disgusting people bc most of the time ppl only pirate artists they don't want to directly support. which, y'know....you don't want to support disgusting people.)

piracy is taking media for free when it usually costs money/requires you to watch ads to consume it. for music thats gonna be downloading youtube videos or downloading music files off piracy websites (im sure they exist, but the youtube thing is just easier.) thats not the legal definition but its the laymans definition, and what most everyone means when they talk about piracy. its different from paying for spotify premium because in that case youre paying for the access to the files, even if its a one time purchase
i have... admittedly never ever heard of people pirating music to not support an artist they dislike. i pirate music because i dont wanna pay for it and i dont want ads. there ya go
im with u on that last part fs. ive seen ppl use pirating as an excuse as to why they're still fans of artists whove done horrible shit

ugh.. really? thats just weird in my opinion. i hope they know that being a public fan of that artist is still supporting them, whether or not they get a few bucks from your spotify streams...
i cant really listen to artists who've done horrible shit lol cant imagine

music piracy in its illegality is sharing, downloading and sales of unauthorised music.
basically downloading and uploading someone else's song without consent is illegal, and listening/downloading (the illegal version) is piracy.
disgusting people can still make good music, and some people are gonna like said music. listening to the artist on spotify or such is giving them money and directly funding them, and is a show of support.
Pirating music is basically "this is good music but you suck f/ck u" and then in a way 'steal' their art.
not sure if i understood this correctly but lol!
that's...basically what i said, but i appreciate the reinforcement, i guess? i still can't understand why people would LIKE disgusting people's music, knowing what they did.
like i understand if a katy perry song comes on at a party and you dance along. but choosing to go out on your own time, on your own computer, makes me feel...odd.
like imagine they painted something and you went and stole it out of their house. it is a big 'fuck you', but it's still their painting. painted by them, with their hand.
i feel like the correct way to give a 'fuck you' to an artist is to ignore them. no matter how much you like the music, isn't it just better to drop them out of your frame of mind? to forget about them entirely? surely there's better music out there.
like, not music related, but jk rowling, for example. people are saying they never liked harry potter anyway, which is probably so they can feel like it's less difficult to ignore her, but the reality is, a lot of people liked harry potter when they didn't know what kind of person she was.
most trans people, knowing that supporting her is directly funding anti-trans charities, have cut off supporting her and encourage others to do the same.
it's hard to cut it off. there's harry potter stuff everywhere: quizzes, merch, theme parks, lego sets, food, it goes on and on and on. it's difficult to ignore. but a lot of people choose to anyway because they understand they liked this for a reason, and for this artist to get what they deserve (being ignored), the consumer must sacrifice their enjoyment.
i don't understand why people wouldn't do the same thing for other artists, even if they've done small, insignificant things in comparison to trying to kill trans ppl, basically.
i feel like it's really selfish to pirate someone's music. it's only a legal "fuck you" to the artist, but socially, you still say you love their music, you still call yourself a fan (though you claim you don't support their actions)...the artist gains most of their traction from word of mouth, social endorsement. (some artists care all about money but most are defined by their fanbase).
in my opinion the best way to punish a problematic artist is to socially cut them off.
is there something i'm missing in your reasoning here? or am i just being the fun police...

Ahh!! I see what you mean, honestly i do agree with you, knowing someone has done something really terrible is enough for me to block the artist on every platform and never listen to them again.
Even so i guess some people just cant help what they like, ive seen a lot of people pirate weird artists while socially talking sh/t about them and the fact theyre weird. I’d say the connection some people have with specific songs is enough to override the disgust they get from knowing the artist is terrible?

that's true! specific songs, i feel, are a little easier to understand in terms of connection. maybe if it's personal you would forget a bit about your disgust, i can see that.

pirating stuff can also be just to show a middle finger to big corporations who want to own the rights to everything
"you will own nothing and be happy" so if you won't own nothing, then what's the point in spending money for things that you don't even own, so just pirate it
nobody says that it's wrong to not obey the big bad guys of this world
okay that's one hundred percent true! i do think that a lot of times, sleazy corporations buy the rights to stuff people really like! i see nothing wrong with pirating the new marvel movie or a disney movie or whatever because they're obviously owned by a fuckass corporation!!
i'm not against pirating by any means, because i think movies stand on their own as pieces of art you can watch and throw yourself out into the world enlightened by. not every single person that works on a movie is evil or governed entirely by an evil corporation!
i just don't understand pirating an artist's music when they're singing about raping children, for example. or at least when they're not directly saying it, you know that's what they're talking about.
i don't understand why people would feel the need to pirate a song by someone who's singing about the disgusting things they've done, or by someone who's done disgusting things.
i'll admit i know less about music than movies, but i feel like music artists need social traction more than economic, and movies are the opposite, which is why pirating movies just makes more sense to me.
i think i might be making things very black-and-white here, so apologies.
i think really the only good time to pirate someone problematic's music is when they're dead. (e.g. 4Dbling). I wouldn't, because the song "Strawberry Angel Cake" features lyrics about a girl being ONLY SIXTEEN but.......it's less morally reprehensible than just downloading it while he was still alive. i feel.
maybe i'm being a total puritan here which is horrible but there's a lot more nuance to my opinion and i'm not sure i'm being fantastic at communicating it...

because some love "burger music" (aka trash music) or just like the vibe of it, since a lot of people don't know what the song's about when they enjoy its instrumental

maybe that's true, but I feel like when you have the internet you could do plenty of research about that kind of stuff.

for me pirating is like how you said it at the start. Just going onto a site which has free movies or going into a Google drive and watching it there, or downloading the media off of one of those things to have on your own device.
I guess pirating music would just be doing the same thing, but off of youtube by third-party downloading sites. I’ve done that before too (downloading music from YouTube and putting it onto my mp3 player). Since you’re not paying to be ALLOWED to download it, it’s piracy.
Ive never really felt like I was going to get caught or that I was at risk, I think it’s moreso the sites themselves that let you do those things that are at risk of getting shut down.
I don’t think that pirating music and media in general ‘excuses’ an artists actions as much as it makes the consumption of the art they made ethical, since you’re not giving them money if you pirated them
yk what that's true, it is technically ethical, but i personally can't listen to someone's music if i know they're a horrible person. the music isn't that good for you to go to the lengths to pirate it, i feel like...
i'm surprised downloading music to put on your mp3 is pirating! i had no idea that was illegal. just a glimpse into how anticapitalist my mind has become, i guess.
thanks for the insights!
