Digital footprint

I think it's common to see people doing the weirdest stuff on social media and just any platform in general. And maybe it's just me, people might not care about digital footprint. Also, who has the time to be on someone's tail just to find out what type of reputation they have on social media?? Some people do, but you know I just wonder how other people handle with their digital footprint. Do you guys just keep the same usernames or similar ones on every platform you use? Do you post the same things on those accounts as well? I really wonder because I'm a bit insecure of whatever I do on the internet.

Kudos: 3

i have OCD and it used to affect how i used the internet a lot (still does to some extent, but it's shifted focus for the most part and i've become less anxious about it over time). i would worry so much about my footprint and i was really scared that i would say or do something online that somebody would find so distasteful/offensive they'd try to doxx/stalk me. so i would change some personal information details, barely talked online at all, and i would delete all of my accounts every 2-3 months to start over from scratch. it made me feel safer but also like i was missing out on a lot of what are now normal experiences for people my age: using social media more personally. over time it just faded as i started forcing myself to comment when i wanted to, stop holding myself back so much. but i still delete accounts sometimes when i make a comment that gets downvotes/dislikes or that i find embarassing in hindsight.

i used to post cringey videos on tiktok when i was 19 until somebody commented on a really vulnerable one where i was super happy about a milestone in my transition "hey, you should take this down, this is the kind of stuff that ends up in cringe comps and makes us all look bad." so i deleted it immediately and logged out. didn't delete the account and like a total dummy i left it linked solely to a phone number i haven't used in years. i talked to support a few times but they won't let me delete the account, so the videos are still floating out there. it sucks but it is what it is. people post embarassing stuff sometimes and once you do it enough you realize it's not as big of a deal as it feels when you're in that anxious state of mind.

but anyway, i definitely post differently on different platforms. i'm a little more edgy on tumblr and a little more friendly here i think. i don't use the same usernames for most things

I haven't done anything crazy online that id be worried about someone finding, lol. I agree with you, I feel like people don't really care about digital footprint so they're just kind of saying/doing whatever.

This is the most “out there” I’ve been online aside from dating apps. I figure if I’m on a dating/mature corner of the internet, then “we’re all adults here” and it will be alright 😅 But I will NEVER put anything on Tiktok or YouTube. I have a giant fear of becoming a meme or getting clipped saying something stupid online and having it ruin my life :gasp: I used to be more careful with more acceptable platforms like this and only use one or two images for everything and not lots of different ones so that people can’t impersonate me or run me through AI. But now I use more photos 🤷‍♀️ Are you concerned about this in terms of safety or employability?

Probably both lol
