I want to get into metal but was wondering... What are some good bands to start with? The only ones I can say I know enough to say I like is Slipknot and Sonata Artica. Not the same vibe but I like both.

Depends on what you like.
If you're a fan of Slipknot already, I would check out Deftones / Tool / System of A Down / Korn / Limp Bizkit.. This is more in the style of Nu Metal, which is a signature 2000s sound.
If you like more emo, Post Hardcore is your route. This will be more melodic but still fall in like with heavy riffs / drums. Most of it can be a mix of hardcore punk and metal.
Saosin, Silverstein, Bayside, Escape The Fate, Alesana, Hawthorne Heights, Glassjaw, etc.
Then there's the late 2000s / 2010s metalcore / deathcore era. This will have your crab core style bands, scene aesthetics, and more of a 2010s hot topic vibe.
Asking Alexandria, Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Suicide Silence, I See Stars, Bullet For My Valentine, We Came As Romans, The Plot In You, Architects, Currents, etc.
Lastly, I would feature more hardcore centered bands like Hatebreed, Knocked Loose, Counterparts, Boundaries, etc.
I haven't listen to the heavier stuff since I broke my back and had physical therapy. I was a big metal head and transitioned to edm slowly afterward.

Not sure, I'm not into it.
But when I got into Pop Punk, I'm listening to Operation Ivy, Isocracy, Sweet Baby, Crimpshrine, and a couple of others.
