So I've been working on my own custom World of Warcraft expansion called Nullspire.
The basic idea started because I love WoW, but I've always wanted to see what it would be like if I could actually make my own expansion instead of just sitting there going "Blizzard should've done this" every five minutes.
Nullspire is being built on a Legion era WoW client, but the actual story, zones, quests and content are going to be custom. I'm also designing it to work more like a single-player RPG inside WoW, so you won't need a massive guild or 20 people online just to actually experience the important parts of the story.
The main threat is a race called the Vaerian who are controlled through a hive mind by K'jall.
K'jall is basically the main villain of the expansion, but he isn't just constantly standing around outside waiting for the player to hit him. By the beginning of the expansion he has sealed himself inside the Nullspire, where he controls the Vaerian and their invasion from inside.
The Horde and Alliance both have their own reasons for fighting back, and the main goal of the expansion is pretty simple:
Stop the invasion. Destory the Nullspheres and Kill K'jall.
The story also changes some things from normal Warcraft history.
Thrall survives the Battle of spirefall, but loses an arm during it. He continues leading the Horde for a while after that, and eventually Garrosh still takes over at roughly the same point he does in the normal timeline.
I'm trying not to make Nullspire feel like one of those custom servers where everything is just "here is a boss with 900 million health and a sword the size of Orgrimmar."
I want it to actually feel like an expansion.
New storylines, proper quest chains, characters that matter, areas that have a reason to exist, and hopefully a world that feels believable enough that you could imagine Blizzard releasing some cursed alternate version of WoW where this actually happened..
And a new zone (well, repurposed old zone that nobody likes).
One thing I should probably make clear is that I don't plan on releasing Nullspire publicly.
This is basically just a personal project for me to mess around with, learn from, and build the kind of WoW expansion I'd want to play myself. I'm not trying to turn it into a public private server or anything like that.
Right now I'm still working on the server setup, scripting and figuring out exactly how I want everything structured.
There's a LOT still to do, but it's finally getting to the point where it feels less like an idea in my head and more like an actual project.
I'll probably use this blog to post updates as I make progress, including screenshots, lore, zones, quests and whatever horrible bugs I accidentally create along the way.
Anyway.
This will probably take me a legitimately long time to do but it'll be worth it
