hai! this is a tech post but also more of a personal life post, not sure what to categorize this as but maybe tech is the best way to put it anyways ^^
as for where I've been, basically I kinda had a rlly meh couple of weeks.. one of those things was, right after I had everything set up and even a new PDA to play around with, my iMac with Windows Vista died!
and this may sound dumb but that was a pretty major dent in my whole moving away from "modern smart" devices strategy. and one thing that iMac helped me with was thinking about FriendRewind, since it was one of the main things I used it for. I even considered setting it as my start page (altho I wanna build my own one now since I can't find anything that truly matches old school MSN that isn't the crappy moderrn MSN and that doesn't show miserable news lol). aaand then it just... died :/ and the repair is a bit scary for my liking..
so I kinda regrettably forgot about FriendRewind.
or kinda. because I bought another iMac, to upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista, as you casually do.
it's a fucking great deal too. 2013 iMac with 8gb DDR3 RAM, 4th gen Core i5, 1TB HDD, still running MacOS X Mavericks, sadly the speakers on it are bust due to something stuck in the aux jack but at 40 odd quid idm that!
I'm on Windows 7 rn, altho I've been more tempted to use Mavericks if anything. I'm considering maybe making the MacOS partition more media focused for my iPod and media and use the Windows 7 partition for everything else, makes a lot of sense especially when you consider that either way I'd be able to access the media just by tapping into the other partition!
and honestly WIndows 7 is such a vibe. I'm not sure if 7 or Vista really raised me, because while my first ever PC ran Vista, I was first exposed to computers running 7 and XP in school, with plenty of hours being spent crowded around the teacher's smartboard drinking in Office 2011's (totally peak imo) tab UI or being in the corridor playing Flash games on an XP PC, which funny enough, had Media Player 11, Office 2010, and craziest of all, was synced to the school's wallpaper, which was... the Windows 7 wallpaper. I'd say despite never even owning a Windows 7 PC in my life, Windows 7 was definitely part of my childhood.

your screenshots look really nice :) one thing i have to say is that windows 7 is definitely an upgrade over vista because vista suxxxx!!!11!1one! i always hated that release :p
xp and 7 are workhorses and vista was a mistake >:pp oh the trials and tribulations that os put society through...

tbh I do get some of the hate against Vista since the launch version was pretty buggy and it was just the right thing at the wrong time, plus drivers were slow to support the OS - especially Nvidea drivers, gotta love how we're going through a repeat of that with Linux. as the wise Linus said, fuck you Nvidea.
but at service pack 2 of Vista, which released the same year as Windows 7, I'm willing to bet that at the very least they have basically the same underlying kernel and backend (not that I really know much about that stuff), and that Windows Vista SP1 is probably just Windows 7 RTM with a different explorer.exe and slightly different aesthetics. plus with that iMac, it was Vista or XP unless I wanted to upgrade MacOS, so I chose Vista cus it was pretty capable of it. plus I grew up with Vista so...
I have still got Vista. I bothered to go through the effort to instead grab my first ever laptop as a kid and reinstall Windows Vista onto it. so now I have a Windows XP netbook I carry around daily, a Windows Vista laptop from my childhood, a Windows 7 iMac I daily drive, a Windows 8.1 tablet, a Windows 10 tablet I use for work, a Panasonic Let's Note that runs Fedora Linux but can run Windows 11 if I really want it....... I think I'm sorted if I ever need to run certain software xd
