I remember a time (not too long ago) when I was completely broke (and not just one bad month away from it like I am now) so I still think it's an absolute financial suicide to go out to a restaurant in this economy...
But I was a good boy and survived another 6 day work week so I reckon I deserve a prize...
since I haven't been to a restaurant in over 6 years and I know that a BigMac today costs like a prime steak dinner with all the trimmings, I shudder to think how much a plate of Dim Sum might cost...
Would probably land my broke ass right into chapter 11
So I made some from scratch
pretty basic filling of ground beef, ginger, Shiitake mushrooms, scallions, garlic, and cabbage (lots of cabbage, it's cheap filler!) Shaoxing wine, soy sauce and some corn starch, not the traditional ingredients, you'll have to forgive me.

Made the wrappers out of fine 00 flour to keep them nice and white (the all purpose kind can get a yellow tint when steamed)
you'll have to excuse me for not taking the time to make those pretty folds, like I said it was a long week and I'm dead tired...

after getting the bottoms nice and crispy I steam them for like 10-13 minutes

They aren't winning any beauty pageants any time soon that's for sure
But let me tell you, they taste amazing, especially with my homemade spicy peanut sauce and a good Japanese beer.
and all that for less than the price of a tip for a meal like this.

A little moment of comfort in this crazy post Harambe world of ours...
hope you'll have a great weekend.
cheers!

Food that doesn't win beauty pageants often tastes the best.
They look delicious, I've made them partly from scratch a couple of times (I didn't make the pastry) and it's very worth it!

I know what you mean, it's very rare here too, I stumbled on it be accident in the Alcohol section of an out-of-the-way Russian convenience store, never seen it before... wonder if I'll see it again

mixmixmix
what a skill
mine looked like a mishmash of a gone wrong vegetable soup
the metal straws look fancy!
😆 vegetarian Dim Sum is harder to make since you don't have a protein to bind everything together, I've never tried making them without meat.
thanks, those are titanium Korean-style chopsticks, got them on Amazon a few years ago they were not expensive and they are very lite and don't get hot like the steel kind and they are much easier to clean than the wood kind.
