I’ve been wanting a cat for sometime, I mostly got cats as a gift when I was a kid (graduating elementary, and 14th birthday) so I was ALWAYS unprepared!

“here is this living creature, we bought you enough for for sayyy, the fist week? no toys, no bed, and some very dusty litter. enjoy!” -my parents
now, granted my parents didn’t know much about keeping a cat, and neither did i given I was a kid. but would it have KILLED THEM TO DO AN OUNCE OF RESEARCH?!? I banned them from getting me cats since the last incident. the incident being, during my senior year of highschool in the middle of the night my dad asked me “do you think you can take care of your aunts cat? she’s in her 8th month of pregnancy and its getting a bit hard for her to do it.”
“sure, when is she dropping it off?”
“now. she’s driving to our house. right. now.”
I took the cat in, nothing but a litter box, food bowls, and a hairbrush. it ran away 5 months later because dad left the door open “so he can take a walk around the neighborhood! I thought he would come back!”
Future cat plans
I shall get a new cat someday, after my aunt who is allergic to cats moves out of my room(a whole different story) so far I have locked a few things down.
I want a gray or black cat. all white cats have this weird gunk around their eyes that I’m scared of.
I am getting an automatic litter box. scoopin’ the poopin’ was the worst part of getting a cat for me everytime.
I’m gonna get TOYS and a CAT TREE and GOOD FREAKING ENTERTAINMENT!!! non of this “here is the cat an nothing else.” NOPE!! THE BED WILL BE HERE BEFORE THE KITTY!!
I’m getting good food and good treats! when I was a kid I only bought the cheap stuff because there is only so much my allowance could buy.
what more should I get? if you’ve owned a cat long long long term what are some things I’m overlooking? please I’ll genuinely be forever ruined if my first cat as an adult just runs away or gets given away like all the prior ones have been :(

Wow that sounds like your family sucks with cats, I'm sorry you dealt with that. Good for you for doing the research 🧡
It sounds like you have a good base plan going! I will add that you should definitely make sure your cat is comfortable with you touching their feet. It will make trimming their claws easier for you both. Also harness training them is a good idea too, so you can give them supervised outside time if you want. It would also help with travel when needed :)

I liked the name Dorian after reading The Picture Of Dorian and the name Heidi :3
but I’m probably gonna wait til i find and see the cat. what if it doesn’t look like a Heidi and looks like a Gertrude? much to consider.

I never had a cat before, I always wanted one but y'know, my family was always really against cats. But I wouldn't trust your parents around cats LMAO but I think you could handle a cat, well, if you're responsible for it. But I don't doubt it because despite your parents still offering you cats, and you deny wanting any so that nothing of the sort can happen again, is very responsible of you.
I just don’t want the poor babies mistreated :(
I told them if any new cat came in it is staying in MY ROOM unless i supervise it outside. and if we go on long trips I’m no longer letting family members petsit it and just let it go to a pet hotel instead. I lost Leo because “your cousins just loved it very much..” IDCC?!? GIVE ME MY CAT BACK???
