The fact a bit of the world believes United States is responsible for so much garbage in the ocean, it's partially true, but it's deeper than that.
Let's look at corporations and US EPA laws.
EPA is quite strict compared to some countries(Looking at you India and China in particular) but with enough money you can grease the wheels so to speak..
Corporations also adopted "Planned Obsolescence" in the 1960's and 70's, how can you make money if your tires last a hundred years? you can't! can you?
The Yangtze River for instance is heavily polluted due to little to no Environmental laws, and a lot of it flows into the ocean. Now let's look at the issue(sort of), America is a very heavy consumerist nation, we want lots of cheap crap, who provides cheap crap? China! they do so because of trade arrangements and the like.
Another problem is the United States Government does not punish it's corporations for transgressions. And as I say that, Britain recently jailed someone for cleaning up a river that was heavily polluted due to immigrants and corporations, He is facing heavy fines and prison time for clearing up a river that was polluted!
And that, dear friends, is what hisses me off, till next time.

All the government figures and CEOs are sleeping together so sadly I doubt punishment will ever happen

all western companies including in the US export millions of tons of trash to 3rd world countries, the US used to export most of it to china but after chinas import ban it changed to Malaysia, indonesia and vietnam, they do this because EPA laws aren't as strict in those countries as you've mentioned therefore its cheaper for them. Yes it should be punished 😜
