convinced my [unlabeled situationship?] to get into deltarune and now they’re way more into it than i ever was. they tell me about finding all the secret bosses and i’m like.. fuck there are secret bosses? lol i don’t really play games like that, trying to complete them 100%, i’m just there to experience the story & characters and maybe some good gameplay once in a while. but that’s all besides the point
i mentioned earthbound and they were like ehhh it doesn’t seem like it’ll have the same emotional depth and deeply character-focused writing that i enjoy in DR. i was like. ha. did you know earthbound is the whole reason undertale and deltarune exist. toby fox was involved in earthbound fan hacking communities back in the day and went as far as to put it out there that he’d totally help develop mother 4 (a new earthbound game). there is so much about earthbound that obviously influenced him a lot like the music, the graphics, the 4th wall breaking, the characters who maybe aren’t written with as much depth as undertale/deltarune characters but who all have their own distinct personalities, stories, and parts of the game. they even seperate and come back together like in deltarune, you slowly add your friends to your party throughout the game. the humor is obviously similar as well, earthbound is a really funny and charming game. i didn’t want to spoil the ending for them but i mean. come on. the influences are so obvious
anyway talking about it so much reignited my love for earthbound so while they’re finishing up chapter 5 i’m starting a new playthrough of both DR and EB. and if any of you youngheads are interested in knowing where a lot of the coolest parts of toby fox’s work comes from, not all of it but quite a lot can be traced back to this game & this fandom. put some respect on my boy Ness
