"Somebody asked my opinion, and I said, “You know when you can’t remember whether somebody has a mustache? You’re sitting there thinking, wait, do they have a mustache or not?” That’s what I said. What I should have said was, “Yeah, everything seems okay to me.” But I didn’t say that.
The person looked at me and said, “What does a mustache have to do with anything?” And I said, “Well, you know. Like, do they have a mustache? Don’t they?” She said, “Why are you talking about a mustache? We’re not talking about that.” And I thought, okay, sorry. What I should have said was simply, “Everything seems okay.” (to me, those statements mean exactly the same thing)
The moment I get into a social situation, some social version of me seems to push the regular version aside and say, “I’ve got this. I know exactly what they want.” Then it produces an answer that seems perfectly reasonable to me and apparently not nearly as reasonable to everybody else. I 100 percent understand completely that this kind of answer isn’t helpful to some people.
I’m always trying to tell that part of myself to tone it down. But social me is already ahead of me, saying, “No, no, I understand the situation.” And the whole thing happens so fast that I can’t really get hold of it before the words are already out.
