Fake fans

I hate fake fans with a passion. 

There have been instances when people who are huge fans (or even partially) of certain bands forget a song name, a lyric, or a member’s name, or even the album names. That’s alright. No one needs to memorise everything about a certain band.

Ask me to name songs by listening from the My Chemical Romance album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, and I won’t be able to guess the name, even if i know the entire song. Even though it’s my most favourite album. The same goes for Pierce the Veil’s Props and Mayhem, Radiohead’s The Bends, or Panic! At the Disco’s Pretty Odd.

But what I hate is when certain people know ONE song and consider making themselves the biggest fan (even going as far as being possessive about it), without even listening to the entire band. Honestly, Radiohead is a great example for this. People will absolutely LOVE Let Down, but make faces when they hear Everything In Its Right Place. And I totally get it, maybe not the entire thing is suitable for you. But don’t go around claiming you’re Radiohead’s biggest fan.

I’m not a type of person to say “name three songs”, however I know when someone’s lying about being a fan. And it’s so disrespectful to the ones who actually love the band, or at least listen to them to a certain degree.

One example is: There’s a person who has a very wide range of music (basically asking people what they like, listening to one song from said artist, and claiming to be a fan). They aren’t even that into alternative music, and today I mentioned how much I love She Wants Revenge to my other friends. That person immediately looked at me and went “you like She Wants Revenge??? Me too!!” And I knew they probably didn’t. Because it was wayyy out of their range. So I just asked “what’s your favourite song”, to see if they really were into She Wants Revenge. Because if they were, ofc I’d give reccs or talk about it. 

And guess what? They said “i dont remember the name.” After claiming they LOVED the band. Absolute bs. They went “I need to look at the name.” And they opened Spotify, and said “I like A Little Bit Harder Now.” Most famous song btw. Like I know its good, I love that song too, but to claim you were a HUGE fan, and then pull a stunt like this, is just stupid.

What are your thoughts? Was this an overreaction? Do you guys have similar opinions/experiences?
