finally listened to an album with my lazy ass

Meredith Monk - Book of Days (1990)

So i found this album before i watched the movie because apparently theres a MOVIE TO THIS. its about a girl who can see the future in medieval times, and it draws the parallels between ills then and now, black plagues, AIDS, injustice and racial conflicts and wars, all back then and now and how nothing truly changes. concept is so sick.

the trailer for the film is HAUNTING!!!, took me a while to think of it but THATS the word id use to describe this album, haunting. makes perfect sense considering the girl is haunted by visions.  its an avant-garde folk album (i think) i dont really know, i dont concern myself too often about genres, i tend to like anything!

this album cover is also sick!! thats another reason i wanted to listen to this so bad. its so badass to me

14 Songs ! the album is beautiful, i love how there are leitmotifs throughout the songs, with melodies and even song titles. its mostly wispy, collage-like, harmonic singing and chants, which i also love,,  i just love folk music in general.

sometimes its VERY ghostly, again, its haunting. occasionally there will be chords that along with the vocals are the most beautiful combination ever, and i wish there were more sections like that but its perfect as it, it makes the parts where other instruments are brought in more special.

knowing that this is tied to a film, i was imagining so many scenes in my head during the songs. its actually really cinematic. all the scenes i imagined probably pale in comparison to the actual movie , which ive only heard good things and im really excited, might watch it later this months end.

"Fields / Clouds" was the first song i heard from this, and i was pretty much on board immediately. i genuinely sing/hum this song like daily,, and after listening its still a highlight for me!!

i also loved - Afternoon Melodies, Eva's Song, Jewish Storyteller / Dance / Dream, Madwoman's Vision and Cave Song
