Fine, Christ, I finally tried out the DS-1

I mean, it's more or less one of the universal "I am starting out and will buy this used" pedals. It has a computer mouse variant, it's been reimagined several times by various builders, "it's the Cobain pedal!!!", so on and so forth... And true to its rep of being super cheap to buy used, I bought mine with some spare cash. There were about six or seven of them at the store (one MIJ, one modern Malaysia build, some with frayed paint) — I chose the one with funky knobs instead of the stock ones. Love it when used pedals are slightly off like that.

It turns out that it's the perfect candidate to drive my FX86B variant Death Metal, which is missing the top part of its treble knob. A dirt stack that looks as ugly as it sounds... It makes the heart swoon and take flight into oncoming traffic. I used to have an MXR Timmy fulfill this purpose but it was overkill for my needs. Dr. Scientist BoostBot was also a fun Death Metal friend experiment with the meter and all, but it wasn't enough for me. But yeah, DOD and Boss on the same board because company tribalism is dead, goddammit.

I've seen that the DS-1 is usually deployed for amp dickery or, as stated, layering dirt pedals for more unique distortion. Not all that many riding for it being used solo, especially on standard electric guitar. Still, every take has its adherents. I think the DS-1 is serviceable enough on bass, but would benefit from something extra in the chain and a lot of guitar knob noodling to locate sweet spots.

I'll go more into detail about my DS-1 settings in another post about my board and guitar. But for now, you win, standard issue orange box. My love and devotion are yours, provided I don't find some other stompbox that can do your job better and with coolest substitute knobs.
