As some who’s like- embarrassingly new to the Alternative subgenre of music, I have a really hard time telling what exactly classifies as ‘Emo’ music. And I swear to god I’m being genuine- I just really wanna know. Because apparently, a lot of the bands I listen to don’t actually qualify as Emo, but are lumped into the group by association. I ask cause like- I’m asked what kinda music I listen to, and I usually just say “Alternative” cause that’s just what I’m really into right now. I don’t want to accidentally call a band that isn’t Emo, Emo- you know?
Also, could someone explain the difference? Again, this is genuine, and my way of trying to educate cause I really love the music I listen to and wanna be able to properly identify it!

sooo #1 DONT USE SPOTIFY PLAYLIST like them things will give you like top 10 most known emo bands ever XD i rec going on last.fm and going under the emo category, thats how i find most of my artists
#2 youll get a understanding once you listen to the genre for a while but youll notice its mainly just 90s-2000s alt rock i couldnt tell you exactly what makes "emo" "emo" but i can say that if you hear that high pitched strung out wonderwall voice its emo 100% XD
#3 if your really struggling to understand what the genre is, listen to crunkcore you might not like it at first but its a good starting point to understand the "emo" sound
#4 if you go to someone like all time lows spotify account and keep scrolling through their "listeners also like" thing youll find plenty of really good bands
BUTTTTT THATS ABT IT I DONT HAVE MANY TIPS FOR GETTING INTO IT JUST MORE SO UNDERSTANDING IT SO IM SORRY IF THIS DIDNT HELP YA TO MUCH XP
