Getting diagnosed with ADHD. The good, the bad, and the ugly

Hello everyone, I'm 16 this year and I just want to share my experience of getting diagnosed with ADHD with everyone. This post will feature three sections, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The good:

  • It has honestly been life changing for me. I felt like I could understand myself better.
  • Taking the medicine as well has been a game changer. Before meds, I could barely focus in class, always submit homework late, and do really badly for my exams. But now, I actually can study, do my homework and revise for my exams!
  • I am very very very thankful for my parents because they're so supportive....so this journey has been easier for me
  • I get extra time during exams which is really really helpful!
The bad:

  • I have face some issues, though not many, with the people around me. My tuition teacher (the one who asked me to get diagnosed btw), and a few classmates here and there.
  • The meds are expensive. Really really expensive. They help a lot, but they cost up to $6SGD PER PILL. I just feel like especially for minors...there should be some form of subsidy...you know?
The ugly:

  • There's not much ugly for this, in fact, some people may see this as a good thing.
  • After taking the medication, my appetite detoriated a lot. I love love love loveeeee to eat. But after this, I completely lost the motivation to eat. Most of the time, I could go the entire day with only eating one meal, compared to last time where I would get hungry every two hours. And in a span of three weeks, I lost 2kg. No exercise, just like that. Although some people might see this as a good thing, I don't. It's honestly very unhealthy. It feels sad that Im not able to enjoy food as much as before
  • Mood swings. I'm a really bubbly energetic person, but because of the meds, I can go from really happy to having no energy and being really irritable

Overall, I know it's not going to be an easy journey. But I know all my friends and family will make this journey of mine a little easier. Thank you for reading!

Kudos: 3

I had one too honestly, I don't have much to share personally.

But I wish you all the best all around for this year and for the years to come.
