My aunt knows half the shit I've watched and my mom has her own niche of anime she watched, but she wasn't immersed in anime as a whole like my aunt was. It's crazy though, I'll talk about an anime I started watching and my aunt's like "I know that one" and I'm like WHAT!!!! Cause I rarely meet people who know about things I like, but tbh I prioritize the timeless classics over what's popular in the now, so it's not shocking she knows most of them lol
It's the same deal for liking metal, apparently my dad was a metalhead back in the day. Which is shocking because man he's not cool enough for that shit these days... And I don't just mean "my dads so uncool!" in the normal way, I mean he's a boring ass born-again Christian who's only hobby is evangelism and complaining that his DCI show has a gay person in it (literally friendly fire, but that's a story for another time.)
I also inherited like 80% of my moms music taste... She's why I love new wave, rock, jazz, classical, punk, grunge, and some goth music. She was in a lot of alternative subcultures and I always forget, you'd never be able to tell now adays. She's so chill though, she's not like my dad and still has these interests music-wise even if she doesn't dress to express it anymore. Like she still keeps up with the cure and buys every new release, that's true dedication and I admire it. Songs of a Lost World? Yeah she ordered it immediately. She must maintain her collection...
My mom is also a huge nerd about loads of media, half of the movies on my interest list are ones SHE showed me, whether directly or because I found it in her collection. Like THANK YOU MOM for giving me a childhood of Ghibili films... Praise be the heavens
Not to mention 80s voltron and atla. THANK YOU GOD!
She also introduced me to The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, which I can testify are POPULAR FOR A REASON!!!! I'm more casual than she is, but that doesn't mean these series don't mean a lot to me.
She also LOVES martial arts movies, and I have to admit I've grown quite fond of them myself. I need to watch more, she has like 60 cds of pure cheesy action waiting for me... I wanna watch them with her though and she's so busy :,(
She has other interests I don't share of course, a notable one being the sci-fi genre. I'm more of a casual (and picky) watcher of sci-fi, to the point I wouldn't call myself a true fan o f the genre, I just like some stand-outs, meanwhile she'll just gobble up any sci-fi thing she sees.
