Serious music is a very broad topic but you could think of an idea and build off of that and depending on what you're looking for you can like find inspo from other works

it depends of what you mean by serious, if by that you mean that; an emotion youre trying to convey is represented by your song.
i’d start simple, try to match a chord with whatever you want to demonstrate. (For example Happiness with a Cmaj7, or sadness with a Emin7) just to give an example.
I personally can only do comedy but thanks for the tips!
