how2hairstyle??

Okay, so, I just recently bought hairspray for this kris cosplay I'm gonna do today, and I decided; "why not use it today for school?"

So I did. It made my hair more volumized and I was able to style it better. I am definitely not as skilled as I could be with it, but it got me wondering, "how DO you style your hair?"

I usually use pomade (to retain texture) and mousse (for volume) and that gets me quite far in the look I want, but hairspray accomplished it with only one product. So, with my hair (wavy, but on the straighter end) how do you suppose I go about adding texture and volume so it doesn't clump up into a big ball shape and instead has more split apart strands??

(I'm open to buying products if need be, I just want to experiment, also would this belong better on forums, or should I keep it on blogs?)
